About 3 year(s) ago by Claire Cook
While islanders are usually well known for their “laid- back” personalities, one thing most take seriously is their overall fitness. Who says you need to work out alone on a machine to stay in shape? In Galveston there are so many outlets to obtaining a healthy life style that staying active couldn’t be easier.
For the water lovers, SUP Gulf Coast offers paddle boarding right off the Seawall. The supportive staff and view of Pleasure Pier, a unique Galveston monument, helps make the work out less strenuous and more entertaining. S.U.P. Sunset Yoga is offered by Galveston Paddle Board Center directly off Offatts Bayou. It’s a fun way to learn new movements with the challenge of balancing on your board! The Artist Boat encourages you to release your inner Picasso. Artist Boat offers public and private kayak adventures. You have the option of painting your striking Galveston surroundings by having an art lesson in your kayak.
On the island there are fitness groups for all types of athletes or those just looking for something active. If you are a CrossFit fan there are four CrossFit gyms in Galveston. Choose from CrossFit Galveston, CrossFit Tidal Wave, CrossFit Undercurrent and CrossFit Flying Fortress.
Fit Tri Run offers social groups for various race training. They welcome visitors to join their weekly run from the store on Thursdays at 6 p.m. and Saturdays at 6 a.m. Find more suggestions on their website for social biking and running all over Galveston. Also, free yoga classes are available at Galveston Island Brewing on the first Saturday of every month (April – September) provided by the Body Space. Body Space offers yoga, Pilates and barre. You can also take hot yoga at Island Salt Air or take a class at Yoga Haven. Check their websites for a schedule.
The McGuire- Dent Recreation Center offers activities for families of all ages. Community volleyball, basketball and Kickboxing classes are available. A skate park and playground are also available right outside.
Galveston is the prime place to stay active. Whether you are walking your dog through Kempner Park, playing Frisbee with friends on the East Beach or taking a lesson at Ohana Surf & Skate, the most important factor is that you’re having fun becoming the healthier you.
