Ten Plus Recommended Stops for Dessert during the Holidays

About 2 year(s) ago by GalvTravelGirl
Gingerbread, apple cider, and pumpkin are always favorites of the holiday season but then again you can never go wrong with bread pudding or fried Oreos. We are sharing our list of recommended stops for desserts that will put you in the mood for the holiday season.

Near Hotel Galvez & Spa:
ShyKatZ Deli & Bakery, 1528 Avenue L. ShyKatZ offers an amazing selection of pastries including cakes, cookies and more. Desserts are sold by the slice and may vary by day. Popular choices are their Banana Cake, Bread Pudding in varying flavors, Pumpkin Spice Cake, Pecan Pie, and Pecan Pie Cheesecake. If you have a specific request, give them a call in advance and place an order. (Closed Sundays)
Sunflower Café, 512 14th Street. Sunflower Café makes a good stop for hot chocolate and it’s a “go to” for desserts. This is the season for the gingerbread boys along with their Christmas cookies, cut-outs cookies, thumbprints and sand tarts. You’ll be amazed at all the offerings.
Patty Cakes Bakery, 704 14th Street. Patty Cakes is known for their seasonal goodies. Their top seller for the holiday season is their Yummy Pumpkin Cake Bars with cream cheese icing. Plus, look for Miss Patty’s Pumpkin Chiffon Pie.
Ocean Grille & Beach Bar, 1228 Seawall. This is a relatively new spot on the beachfront that offers a great view along with great food. Try their Donut Holes. Just picture goat cheese donut holes tossed in cinnamon and sugar over a chocolate-chipotle ganache.
Gaido’s Seafood Restaurant, 3828 Seawall Blvd. We would be remiss if we didn’t mention Gaido’s Famous Pecan Pie. Call in advance and place an order for pickup or, better yet, place your order online through NeimanMarcus.com. Yes, it will be the best pecan pie that you’ve ever tasted in your entire life.
Nick’s Kitchen and Beach Bar, 3828 Seawall Blvd. This is a treat, Nick’s Kitchen has Fried Oreos and Cinnamon Sugar Bread Pudding on their dessert menu. So if you aren’t up for Gaido’s Pecan Pie try this for your sweet tooth.
Near Tremont House and Harbor House:
La King’s Confectionery, 2323 Strand. In celebration of the holiday season, La King’s makes their ribbon candy in peppermint, lime, lemon, orange and cinnamon using their homemade recipe. Their popular taffy takes a holiday twist with pumpkin, egg nog, spearmint and wintergreen flavors added to the selection. If fudge is your guilty pleasure, they offer egg nog, pumpkin, candy cane, gingerbread and holiday mint fudge for the season. Plus, La King’s follows the recipes of “Purity” ice cream, Texas’ first ice cream manufacturer that dates to 1889. Holiday ice cream flavors include pumpkin pie, apple pie and amaretto almond ice cream.
MOD Coffeehouse, 2126 Postoffice. MOD Coffeehouse offers a cool place to sit outside or in to enjoy a cup of java. Tis the season for their Pumpkin Spice Latte, Peppermint Mocha and Apple Cider but also look for their own concoction called White Christmas (gingerbread, white mocha, peppermint and cinnamon sugar). They also sell homemade Pumpkin Bars, Pecan Bars and Molasses Spice Cookies.
Hendley Market, 2010 Strand. While you are shopping in The Historic Strand District, make sure that you venture to Hendley Market and buy their Cider Deer. Drop this special seasoning into 1 ½ quarts of apple juice or red wine and simmer for 20-30 minutes. You will love it. And, it makes a great gift. (Open Thu-Sun only).
Olympia Grill at Pier 21, 100 21st Street. Olympia offers a harbor view and some great choices for desserts. During the holidays, they are going to offer a home-made dessert called Apple Rose Petal. It is made with dough, strawberry jam and raw apples. Then rolled and baked and served with powdered sugar on top.
Saltwater Grill, 2017 Postoffice. At Saltwater Grill, we recommend the Hot Chocolate Truffle Cake. All their desserts are made on site. If you just want to enjoy dessert, sit at the bar and treat yourself.
Rudy & Paco’s Restaurant and Bar, 2028 Postoffice. While the desserts aren’t listed on their website, we know that you can always order their amazing Bread Pudding and their Tres Leches (Milk Cake). Pair with a nice cocktail or coffee.
Hey Mikey’s Ice Cream, 2120 Postoffice. While this is a favorite stop, we wanted to give you a heads up that they are closed for the holidays from Dec. 12 to Jan. 12 so stop in on your next visit.
One of the charming things about Galveston is that everything is a quick walk or short drive away. Spread the word and enjoy your visit.
