Three Great Ideas for Winter Fun in Galveston

With that in mind, we suggest the following three activities when visiting during the winter months.

  • Nature lovers, curious kids, and professional birders all will appreciate the winter birding opportunities provided by a jaunt to Galveston Island State Park. You’ll see the magnificent Sandhill Cranes in their winter habitat, along with close-ups of hawks, ducks, gulls, sandpipers, plovers, curlews, and more.
  • Bring along your sense of adventure and climb aboard the Port Bolivar Ferry. Glorious sunrises and sunsets provide stunning backdrops for the dolphins and seagulls swimming alongside the shrimp boats and tankers headed to and from the port. Be sure to visit the Bolivar Peninsula for stunning views of both the Bolivar Lighthouse and Fort Travis.
  • Experience unique encounters with otters, penguins, and seals at Moody Gardens’ behind-the-scenes animal encounters. Private and public sessions are available with your choice of giant river otters, penguins, or penguins and seals. Learn about conservation and care of the animals, join the biologist on the training platform, or watch a penguin create a work of art. All proceeds from animal encounters go toward conservation efforts.

Looking to make your stay special? For the best in downtown Galveston accommodations, check into The Tremont House. Beachfront-lovers will appreciate the historic comfort of Hotel Galvez & Spa, and Harbor House Hotel & Marina at Pier 21 offers stunning harbor views.
