Tips for the Sandcastle Competition

Judging is based on an array of factors, including artistic expression, concept originality, difficulty, and carving technique. Whether you intend to be a builder or a spectator, we’re offering a few tips to make the most of a great day at the beach come Saturday, August 24. First, although the beach opens at 6:30 a.m. for teams and sponsors, it will not open to the public until 9:00 a.m., so time your arrival accordingly.

Also, remember that this is a day-long event, with public favorite voting from 1:00 – 3:30 p.m. and the awards ceremony at 4:30; so, bring along water, snacks, or a picnic, plus sunblock and anything else you may need for your day of fun in the sun. Beach chair and umbrella rentals are available. Also, please do not touch the sculptures, even after the event is over, as they will remain on view the day after the event. Lastly, parking is scarce at East Beach and there is no public transportation to the event, so carpooling is recommended. Or, stay on the beach at Hotel Galvez & Spa, and take advantage of their complimentary bikes. Indulge in their fabulous and famous Sunday Brunch the morning after! For luxurious accommodations in the heart of Downtown Galveston, make your reservations at The Tremont House in the Strand, or to be mere steps away from Pier 21, we recommend the Harbor House Hotel & Marina at Pier 21.
