Tips for the Sandcastle Competition

Saturday, August 21, 2021

We are counting down the days to the AIA Sandcastle Competition set for August 21, 2021, at R.A. Apffel East Beach Park. Judging will be based on factors like artistic expression, concept originality, difficulty, and carving technique. Whether you plan to test your skills as a builder or sit back and watch, we are offering a few tips to help you make the most of this annual beach day favorite.

Parking is scarce at East Beach. There is no public transportation to the event, so carpooling is recommended. The beach will open for teams and sponsors at 6:30 a.m., though the public will not be permitted until 9 a.m. You will want to bring along water, snacks, and sunscreen, plus a towel if you plan on taking a dip. Beach chair and umbrella rentals are available. You can vote for your favorite sandcastle from 1:00 – 3:30 p.m. Please do not touch the sculptures, even after the event is over, as they will remain on view the next day. Be sure to stick around for the awards ceremony that begins at 4:30 p.m. After a fun day at the beach, we recommend a stay at Harbor House Hotel. Dine on fresh seafood at Willie G’s across the street, then rest easy in a stylish suite with scenic views.
