What to See and Do at the State Park

The park offers both bay and beach sides, along with such activities as beach and bay exploration hikes, turtle patrols, geocaching, nature field trips hiking, camping on the beach, kayak tours, fishing and fishing clinics, swimming, bird-watching, mountain biking, and much more. Guests can fish for croaker, redfish, spotted sea trout, sand trout, black drum, and flounder from the shore on either side without a fishing license and launch a canoe or a kayak into a variety of paddling trails.

Pack up a hearty picnic to fortify yourself for four miles of trails that traverse a variety of habitats, including boardwalks on the marshes and dunes, observation platforms, and photo blinds. Ranger programs include such topics as the flora and fauna of the island, along with paddling tours, art parties, and star-gazing parties, and the Nature Center is open each weekend from 10:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. The park is not only a fabulous recreation area, but also contains underdeveloped barrier island habitats that remain vital to conservation and a cornucopia of wildlife, including raccoons, armadillos, and marsh rabbits, as well as birds that make their homes here, and those that migrate seasonally, such as mottled and mallard ducks, and wading and shorebirds. The park is open seven days a week all year long.

Stay directly on the beach and enjoy a fabulous Sunday brunch at Hotel Galvez & Spa. For the most elegant accommodations downtown, and an impressive view of the city and the harbor from their Rooftop Bar, reserve your stay at The Tremont House. Or, enjoy a harbor view and be mere steps away from all action from the pier at Harbor House Hotel & Marina.
